On Christmas Day, Russia launched a "inhuman" attack on Ukraine's energy system and cities, using cruise and ballistic missiles, as well as drones. The strikes wounded at least six people in Kharkiv and killed one in Dnipropetrovsk. The Kharkiv region faced blackouts and half a million people were left without heating in freezing temperatures. Russian President Putin deliberately chose Christmas for the attack, which involved over 70 missiles and 100 drones.
Russia's Defence Ministry confirmed hitting critical energy facilities. Ukraine's air defences downed 59 missiles and 54 drones. Ukraine is marking its second Christmas under a new calendar, distancing itself from Russian influence. The attacks on the energy sector have caused extensive damage, leaving many without power, and Ukraine's largest energy company called for more air defence support. The U.S. ambassador condemned the strikes as "weaponizing winter" against Ukrainian civilians.
