Russian President Vladimir Putin apologized to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev for the crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) plane in Kazakhstan on December 25, which claimed 38 lives. During a phone call on December 28, Putin expressed his deepest condolences and explained that the AZAL plane struggled to land due to UAV airstrikes from Ukraine and thick fog over Grozny, Russia. The Russian Federal Investigative Committee is working with Azerbaijan's Prosecutor General's Office to determine the cause of the incident.
