South Korea’s National Police Agency has launched an investigation into President Yoon Suk-yeol on charges of “treason” following his declaration of martial law on the night of December 3. The investigation was triggered by complaints filed by the opposition Korea Reconstruction Party and a group of 59 activists, targeting President Yoon and senior officials, including former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun and Interior Minister Lee Sang-min.
Prosecutors have issued a travel ban on former Minister Kim, who is alleged to have recommended the martial law declaration to President Yoon. Although President Yoon lifted the martial law early on December 4 at the request of parliament, the opposition party, which holds a majority of seats, has initiated impeachment proceedings. The vote is scheduled for December 6, requiring additional support from some lawmakers in Yoon’s People Power Party (PPP) to secure the two-thirds majority needed. However, the PPP has vowed to oppose the motion.
